Endowments and Foundations 2009

Spectrem’s Endowments & Foundations 2009 study explores how managers are responding to today’s challenges.  For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 81 senior officers of randomly recruited organizations.  Respondents included representatives from college and universities (51), community foundations (9), hospital and healthcare foundations (10) and private foundations (11).  Particular focus in this study is directed towards these topics:

  • Sources of outside advice
  • Selection criteria for advisors/consultants
  • Asset Allocation by fund size
  • Role of alternative investments in asset mix
  • Long term issues affecting fulfillment of institutional missions
  • Trends that will impact operations going forward

With a reported decline of 20% or more in assets between 2008 and 2009, coupled with a donor environment also effected by the same challenging economy, endowments and foundations are experiencing pressure on their ability to meet their goals.  How these managers are navigating a negative environment is revealed in this report.    $22,500
