Ultra High Net Worth 2011, Volume 1 - Investment Attitudes and Behaviors

The Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) represent the most desired clients and prospects for financial services providers and advisors.  In 2011 these investors are somewhat cynical about investments and the overall economic situation.  How should financial and investment providers respond to these attitudes?

This analysis of more than 500 investors in the UHNW market (those households with $5 million to $25 million of net worth) analyzes the behaviors and attitudes of these prestigious households.  It focuses on their challenges and concerns and provides opportunities to penetrate this client base.

Key findings include the following:

  • The UHNW are more reliant on financial advisors than in the past.  Two factors drive this reliance:  increasing average age and boredom regarding investments
  • Less than half feel their financial situation will improve in the short term.  How do advisory firms factor this attitude into their investment plans?
  • Younger UHNW rely more on mobile devices for obtaining information than less wealthy households.  What implications does this have for advisory firms?
  • Surprisingly, the concerns and needs of the UHNW mirror the attitudes and fears of less affluent investors.  What is the appropriate income approach for this segment?
